Information for your general practitioner


In order to recommend the best treatment option for you, your doctor will need to find out some information about you.

Your doctor might ask you:

  • Are you unable to take daily calcium and/or vitamin D supplements

  • Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant

  • Are you breast-feeding

  • Have you had kidney problems

  • Have you had some or all of your parathyroid glands surgically removed

  • Do you need any dental procedures such as a root canal or tooth extraction (this does not include regular dental cleaning). Your doctor may possibly request a dental examination with any necessary preventive dentistry carried out prior to medical treatment You should continue regular dental cleanings and practice good oral hygiene.

  • If you have an irregular heart beat

  • If you have asthma from taking aspirin

  • It is important for your doctor to know if you are taking any medicines known to be harmful to your kidneys. Tell your doctor if you are taking medication for high blood pressure or aminoglycoside antibiotics (a type of medicine used to treat severe infections).

  • If you are already being treated with any bisphosphonates (such as zoledronic acid, alendronate, risedronate, clodronate, etidronate, ibandronate and pamidronate)

  • Also, tell your doctor which medications you’re taking, including both prescription and non-prescription medications (e.g. herbal remedies and vitamins).
